Cool-Climate Wines in The Columbia River Gorge

South Hill was founded in 2006 by Philip and Sheryl Jones. After numerous years growing grapes and making wine in Nelson, New Zealand, we were motivated to find a place where we could grow cool climate grapes in a climate similar to New Zealand. The Columbia Gorge viticultural area provided that opportunity.

Underwood Mountain, located at 1850-foot altitude and above the Columbia River, is definitely a cool climate… perfect for earlier ripening varieties. So here we started our second venture in the wine business, growing Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay Noir, and Pinot Noir, just as we have in New Zealand but 8000 miles away.
