The Jones Family
Hill was founded in 2006 by Philip and Sheryl Jones. After numerous years growing grapes and making wine in Nelson, New Zealand, we were motivated to find a place where we could grow cool climate grapes in a climate similar to New Zealand. We also wanted to be close to vineyards that grew Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, etc… varieties that are not well suited to cool climate areas. The Columbia Gorge viticultural area provided that opportunity.
Mountain, located at 1850- foot altitude and above the Columbia River, is definitely a cool climate… perfect for earlier ripening varieties. So here we started our second venture in the wine business , growing Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay Noir, and Pinot Noir, just as we have in New Zealand but 8000 miles away.
Our son Spencer
is the Head Winemaker and viticulturist. He is at the Underwood Winery year- round. Phil and Sheryl are based here from March through November and the New Zealand Spencer Hill crew make a few trips a year to assist in the winemaking.
we are all trained viticulturists and winemakers. the experience is humbling. Meticulous winemaking helps us to make quality wines… but mak ing quality wine at the end of the day begins with quality fruit in the vineyard. We are succeeding in building a reputation for farming grapes in a responsible sustainable way to achieve a great result and leave the land better off than we found it.
time passes we are introducing new wines such as our stunning Rose and Riesling… already winning gold medals. New wines such as Gamay Noir and Pinot M e unie r will be added as these vineyards come into production.
additional niche is making Kosher Wines under the Pacifica label. It has opened up the wonderful world of Oregon and Washington wines to our friends in the kosher world.
The Columbia Gorge is a great place to work and play and we look forward to many more years ahead.
